Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
