No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
